I've asked this question in this blog post following reading the opening chapter of Arianna Huffington's book 'Thrive' (only just started it and already asking myself questions).
What do you see success as? How big your house is? Do you have a pool, horses? Do you own a house yet? In London? What car do you drive? Where do you holiday? How many ski holidays do you have? Where do you shop? Where do you eat? What's your job title? How many hours do you work overtime? How many minions or people underneath you to you have? The questions you can ask are endless but they all lead to two things..
Money and power right? Is that the common thought of what success is?
What about happiness, love, friendship, health, well being, body confidence? Are these included in your thoughts of success?
It's common knowledge that money and power don't necessarily bring happiness. For one power might mean hours and days overworking, taking work on holiday, little family time, high stress levels and the list could go on. But did you know over 30% of people in the US and the UK are not getting enough sleep! So despite earning the mega bucks, you don't really get to enjoy it, not really and it doesn't mean much to you because really you strive for evenings coming home in time to eat dinner with the family or uninterrupted holidays or even being able to lie in bed at night completely thoughtless. This isn't even the case for just those at the top, it's happening in those starting out in the workplace top.
So what next? Take a step back once in a while and really take the time to enjoy life and those around you! Surely it's not hard, I mean it could take a few days, months or even years to understand what success means to you and how you can achieve it but one thing that's got me thinking in the first four pages of this book is that we don't have endless days on this planet and if we looked back on our life would we be happy and satisfied with what we had achieved...
